Gut barrier integrity is a foundational determinant of immune health, influencing systemic inflammatory tone and disease risk. This course offers clinicians an integrative, evidence-informed framework for understanding how the gut barrier functions as a dynamic, multi-layered system, and proposed mechanisms by which dysfunction may contribute to immune dysregulation.
Participants will explore the structural and functional layers of the gut barrier, including the microbial, mucus, epithelial, and immune layers, as well as regulatory systems such as neuroenteric signaling and the gut-vascular barrier. The course examines how tight junction proteins regulate selective permeability, how secretory IgA and peptides provide mucosal protection, and how the gut microbiome supports barrier integrity through the production of short-chain fatty acids and other metabolites. The course also covers the relationship between gut barrier dysfunction and inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, metabolic disease, and cardiometabolic risk.
Clinicians will learn to interpret laboratory markers relevant to gut barrier assessment and immune function, evaluate nutraceutical and dietary interventions with varying levels of supporting evidence, and apply practical dietary and lifestyle strategies to support gut barrier integrity. This course equips clinicians with actionable tools to assess and support gut barrier health as a central pillar of immune resilience and long-term health.
