Exploring the SIBO Breath Test
Published
Introduction
A small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) breath test is a non-invasive tool that may help healthcare providers assess potential bacterial imbalances in the small intestine. (Lim 2023) Patients presenting with a broad range of mild to severe GI symptoms (Lim 2023) have the option of obtaining an at-home testing kit through validated diagnostic laboratories or undergoing testing in a clinical setting.
The testing process requires patients to ingest a measured dose of carbohydrates, commonly glucose or lactulose, and then provide a series of breath samples at regular intervals over several hours. (Rezaie 2017) Samples are then sent back for laboratory testing. Elevated levels of hydrogen and/or methane gases may suggest increased fermentation activity, which can be associated with bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. (Lim 2023)
